Job Description:

This is a 1-year parental cover for the VP Innovation Product Management role within the Future Readiness group that sits within the Supply, Trading & Shipping business (ST&S).

 

The VP leads Vista, ST&S’s business-led innovation team is set up with the mission to help future-proof the organization. We set

out to answer 3 questions:

• how can we creatively use technologies available today to address yesterday’s problems faced by ST&S
• how can technologies of tomorrow give us a commercial competitive edge, today
• what (or how) do we need to do/think/behave differently, in a rapidly evolving business landscape

Vista is an agile, impact-driven and solution-agnostic team within ST&S, focused on analysing and leveraging innovative technologies, business models and ecosystem partnerships to address commercial opportunities.

We do this through close collaboration with our business customers (front / mid / back offices) as well as technology partners (either with external tech companies or bp’s Technology function) and functional enablers.

Leading a diverse team across all ST&S offices globally, we are looking for a hands-on leader with an understanding of how commodity trading works, a strong growth mindset and change management experience. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

You will support leaders and team members on activities across Ecosystem, Engagement and Implementation 

Ecosystem

• Elevate the profile of Vista’s External Insights service by delivering commercial value and help originate meaningful thematic research assignments from senior leaders 
• Continually strengthen and maintain a network of internal (e.g. bp Ventures, Digital Science) and external innovators in competitive or adjacent industries, startups, partners and suppliers, actively engage and create opportunities to build commercial value and collaborate to support and grow ST&S.

Engagement

• Continually sharpen and enhance Vista’s brand across ST&S’ global offices; ensure communication and engagement efforts are effective, impactful, and commercially relevant to business customers
• Maintain and strengthen senior partner relationships across regions; exchange ideas, originate leads for the team to pursue and ensure engagement loops are meaningfully closed
• Continue pipeline balancing to ensure healthy mix of bench-pull vs Vista-push project ideations & initiatives

  

Implementation

• Provide recommendations for scaling, pivoting or discontinuing projects based on meaningful matrix and sound commercial judgment over performance and impact 
• Provide guidance, direction, and creativity to the team to ensure Vista’s processes are streamlined and secure senior leader alignments across functions
• Ensure Vista continues the theme of “accelerated delivery” through creative, resourceful and entrepreneurial ways of working, despite current cost challenges and associated constraints.

Governance, leadership and culture building

• Chair and budget-holder of a cross-functional Innovation Governance Board (other members include VP Data, VP Trading Data Analytics, Technology Principle and T&S Chief Architect) to bring about constructive challenges, as well as support & advice to each project at different lifecycle stages / achievements
• Conceptualise and provide clarity on key goals & objectives for priorities and initiatives; ensure continuous improvement in both format and content
• Effective deployment of team’s resources and capacity management
• Actively seek learning & development opportunities for the team to support development of growth options and support personal growth
• Foster an inclusive, high-performing, collaborative and open environment in Vista
• Champion a culture of innovation, encouraging experimentation and risk-taking across ST&S  

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Experience and understanding of commodity trading or its commercial functions
• Leadership experience building, expanding and leading complex teams; and navigating matrix organizations
• Commercial knowledge and exposure across fields such as new business development, sales / marketing, strategy and change management. Domain expertise in innovation and digital product development is a plus
• Comfort leading through ambiguity, ability to respond resourcefully to changing circumstances, priorities and challenges and deliver results
• Successful track record leading and driving entrepreneurial approaches, change, and/or transformation.
• Balancing a visionary approach with pragmatic delivery so that innovation efforts contribute meaningfully to the business’ success. Able to envision growth beyond BAU activities and materialize next stage success 
• Outcome–oriented. Drive the development of the Vista portfolio based on commercial outcomes. critical metric / benefit / impact measurement vital to success.
• Excellent management across multiple interfaces, regions and teams so ensure Vista success and  and clarity on objectives and success criteria.
• Experience and / or deep interest in emerging technologies and the art of the possible through digital solutions.

Additional Desirable Experience

• Understanding of ST&S business with strong existing relationships across commodities
• Well-established innovation network internally and externally, including prior implementation experience
