Job Description

The Data Centre Operations Specialist is responsible for day-to-day IT operations and data centre support activities, including system and batch monitoring, scheduled job execution, incident escalation, tape management, server operational tasks, remote hands support, and operational reporting.

The role operates primarily through established work instructions, standard operating procedure (SOP), and escalation processes to ensure stable and continuous operation of critical IT infrastructure and services.

What will you do?

1. Batch Scheduling, Monitoring & Execution

• Monitor and manage scheduled batch jobs and workloads using tools.
• Execute scheduled jobs and operational activities according to approved work instructions.
• Identify failed, delayed, or abnormal jobs and perform first-level checks.
• Escalate batch failures and exceptions to the appropriate technical support teams.

2. Infrastructure & Alert Monitoring

• Perform continuous monitoring of infrastructure, systems, applications and backup alerts.
• Monitor operational consoles.
• Acknowledge, validate and escalate alerts according to established procedures and escalation matrices.
• Maintain accurate records of incidents, alerts and actions taken.

3. Server & System Operations

• Conduct routine server and system health checks in accordance with work instructions.
• Perform approved operational activities for Windows and Linux servers, including:
  • Server start-up and shutdown
  • Server reboot
  • Service start, stop and restart
• Perform Ansible OS Patching activities according to approved work instructions and change schedules.
  • Perform monthly UAT and Production OS Patching.
  • OS Patching activities for Windows and Linux.
• Escalate abnormalities or unsuccessful activities to the appropriate technical support teams.

4. Mainframe

• Perform scheduled Mainframe IPL activities in accordance with approved procedures.
• Execute authorised start, stop and restart of mainframe services.
• Monitor activities during execution and escalate exceptions or failures.

5. Backup Media & Tape

• Manage onsite and offsite backup media and storage.
• Maintain and execute tape schedules.
• Perform tape mounting and unmounting activities.
• Coordinate tape movement, collection, delivery and offsite storage requirements.
• Maintain accurate tape inventory and movement records.

6. Printing & Dispatch

• Manage scheduled production printing activities.
• Monitor print jobs and resolve or escalate basic printing issues.
• Perform sorting, handling and dispatch of printed materials according to operational requirements.

7. Remote Hands & Legs

• Provide Remote Hands and Legs support for internal teams, customers and technical engineers.
• Carry out basic physical activities such as equipment checks, cable verification, visual inspection and other authorised tasks based on work instructions.
• Provide onsite escorts and coordinate data centre access clearance.

8. Reporting

• Generate daily, weekly and monthly reports.
• Maintain operational records, checklists and activity logs.
• Prepare monthly SLA and operational performance reports, for example:
  • Equipment uptime
  • Power usage
  • Temperature readings
  • Other agreed infrastructure and service performance indicators

9. Service Desk and Email Monitoring

• Monitor email, incident ticket & service Request.
• Create and manage incident tickets.

10. WSBS

• Manage token, logbooks, security stickers and access card.
• Perform WOI account enabling and password reset support.
• Update appointment master list & Provide ARA room user support and scanning machine backup.
• Conduct night patrol for ARA and CTS Rooms.
• Validate user lists and generate security reports

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess: 

• Diploma, NITEC/Higher NITEC or equivalent qualification in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related discipline.
• Experience in a Data Centre, Network Operations Centre (NOC), IT Operations or Command Centre environment is preferred.
• Basic understanding of Windows, Linux, server infrastructure, batch processing, backup operations and data centre environments.
• Experience with one or more of the following tools would be advantageous:

• Able to follow detailed SOPs, work instructions and escalation procedures accurately.
• Able to perform routine operational activities independently after training.
• Good attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate operational records.
• Good communication and coordination skills.
• Able to work effectively with infrastructure, application, network, security and vendor support teams.
• Willing and able to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays, where required.
